Team Hemley began as ‘Hemley’s Health, Fitness, Sport Development’ in 2012.
Before starting Team Hemley, Michelle had enjoyed a varied professional career over 15 years in the Sporting Industry.
In many locations around Australia, she had worked as a Physical Education Teacher, High Performance Sports Coach, Health Promotion Officer, Exercise Physiologist, plus had spent time in leadership positions in Sport Development & Participation Strategy at Local, State and Federal government.
These experiences were combined with her background as an athlete, club volunteer and committee member on several State Sporting Associations and organisations committed to developing sport. You could say she had seen the sector from every angle!
When Michelle started Team Hemley in 2012, she wasn’t quite sure what it would eventually look like. All she knew was that she wanted to create something inclusive, where every athlete was welcomed and felt valued by their coaches.
Most importantly, she dreamed of creating an organisation that provided a balance between participation and performance.
A community that assisted clubs to holistically support their young athletes and giving young people of all abilities and economic backgrounds the opportunity to develop to their potential.
The business started small, with a Junior Triathlon Program of eight participants out of Christian College Geelong in Term 4, 2012. Next, they went to add a Swim Squad at the same venue……..however only one swimmer showed up and after a few weeks, they had to cancel due to lack of numbers (Team Hemley Swimming now has over 250 swimmers in the Torquay/Geelong region, with most squads at capacity). Solid relationships were built with the local Surf Lifesaving Clubs and within two years, the swimming programs were thriving and at the beginning of Team Hemley, swimming was the largest part of the business.
Over these first few years, Team Hemley maintained a sole operation with Michelle coordinating 15+ sessions on her own, coaching Monday-Saturday morning and evening. In 2014, she began to add other coaches and additional programs to the Team Hemley brand; including Junior Running groups, plus participation programs such as Active Girls 4 Life, Fitness Made Fun and School Holiday Programs. Using Michelle’s experiences in Health Promotion and as a Teacher, Team Hemley successfully began to conduct targeted programs for vulnerable students within schools, building mental health capabilities as well as physical health through the School Focused Youth Service.
2016 saw a whole new dimension added to Team Hemley, as they added a Strength & Conditioning/Exercise Physiology arm to their services, along with a range of new, specialist strength and conditioning staff. Over the next two years, Team Hemley added Athlete Support services, Strength & Conditioning, School & Club Academy Programs and Athlete Development classes such as Strength, Boxing and Speed & Agility.
2018 was a standout year with Team Hemley’s first major School Academy Program (Surf Coast Secondary College), Club Academy Program (Torquay Tigers Football & Netball Club), large numbers at Athlete Development School Holiday Camps and the beginning of a relationship supporting Exercise Science students from Deakin University for practical placements.
In 2019, Team Hemley took the success of their local operation onto the National scene, with a range of Australia wide collaborations and increased focus on consulting, particularly in the Coach Education and Physical Literacy areas.
2020 has seen further adaptions, in part due to the COVID-19 situation with an increase focus in on-line delivery and resource development, including creating an extensive YouTube Channel ‘Team Hemley Superstars’, the development of the Team Hemley Training App and creating our on-line Coach Education Accreditation.
When you ask Michelle what she is most proud of with Team Hemley, she will tell you that the way the business has evolved and adapted to the needs of the community and sector over time, the team orientated and growth mindset culture amongst the staff and interns and the fact the business has survived through some tough personal times and a worldwide pandemic.
Team Hemley are looking forward to what the future holds……however this may look!
